First-Time at CSM? Tips to Make the Most of Your Conference Experience
Attending the APTA Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) for the first time is exciting—and let’s be honest, a little overwhelming. With thousands of attendees, hundreds of sessions, and nonstop opportunities to learn and connect, it can be hard to know where to start.
If this is your first CSM, the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy is here to help you feel prepared, confident, and ready to make the most of your experience. Whether you’re a student, early-professional, or new to pelvic health, these tips will help you navigate CSM like a pro.
1. Plan Ahead—but Leave Room for Flexibility
Before you arrive, spend time reviewing the conference schedule and identifying:
-
Must-attend sessions (especially pelvic health programming, platform presentations, and signature events). Check out the Academy’s programming at www.aptapelvichealth.org/csm or visit APTA CSM Programming page for all programming (including those of other Academies/Sections): https://apta.confex.com/apta/csm2026/meetingapp.cgi
-
Meet & Greets or SIG events that align with your interests. Make sure to RSVP to any SIG events at www.aptapelvicheatlh.org/csm
-
Poster or research sessions you want to explore.
That said, don’t overschedule every hour. Some of the most valuable moments at CSM happen in hallways, at booths, or through spontaneous conversations.
Pro tip: Pick 1–2 priority goals per day rather than trying to do everything.
2. Attend Academy Meet & Greets and Special Events
Academy-hosted events are some of the most welcoming spaces for first-time attendees. These gatherings are designed to help you:
-
Meet fellow pelvic health clinicians and students
-
Connect with Academy leaders and volunteers
-
Learn how to get involved beyond CSM
If you’re unsure where you “fit” at CSM, start here—you’ll find people who are genuinely excited to meet you. Explore upcoming meet and greet events: www.aptapelvicheatlh.org/csm
3. Introduce Yourself
It can feel intimidating, but CSM is one of the easiest places to strike up a conversation. Many attendees are eager to connect—especially students and first-timers. Some attendees wear badge ribbons that can help you l earn more about them (e.g. CSM newbie, specialist, early-professional, etc).
Try simple openers like:
-
“Is this your first CSM too?”
-
“What sessions are you most excited about?”
-
“What session are you heading to next?
-
“Are you involved with the Academy?”
You never know which conversation could turn into a mentor connection, job lead, or future collaborator.
4. Visit the Academy Booth
Make time to stop by the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy booth in the Exhibit Hall. We will be at Booth 1758. It’s a great place to:
-
Meet Academy leaders, staff, and volunteers
-
Learn about education pathways, certifications, and member resources
-
Ask questions about involvement, SIGs, or leadership opportunities
Even if you’re just browsing, the booth is a welcoming home base during a busy conference.
5. Be Strategic About the Exhibit Hall
The Exhibit Hall can be overwhelming—but it’s also full of opportunities. Focus on:
-
Vendors relevant to pelvic health practice
-
Conversations about products, research, or practice tools
-
Free giveaways and special discounts on programs and courses
6. Take Care of Yourself
CSM days are long. Protect your energy by:
-
Wearing comfortable shoes
-
Staying hydrated and fueling regularly
-
Scheduling breaks
-
Getting some sunshine (weather-contingent, take a walk outside!)
Burnout doesn’t help learning—pace yourself.
7. Follow Up After CSM
When you get home:
-
Connect on LinkedIn with people you met
-
Reflect on key takeaways from sessions
-
Explore Academy resources you learned about at CSM
-
Check out ways you can get involved at www.aptapelvichealth.org/volunteer
CSM isn’t just a few days—it’s a launchpad for growth throughout the year.
