Can an Outpatient Exercise Program for Pregnancy Related Pelvic Girdle Pain Improve Pain & Function

Can An Outpatient Exercise Program for Pregnancy Related Pelvic Girdle Pain Improve Pain and Function Versus Education? A Feasibility Study

Jennifer Guan, PT, DPT, MA, Claire Hamnett, PT, DPT, Samantha Jakucionis, PT, DPT, Farah Hameed, MD, Cynthia Chiarello, PT, PhD

Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PRPGP) is a type of low back pain that is estimated to affect up to 72% of the antepartum population and 25% of the postpartum population. Current research on the management of PRPGP is inconclusive.

The relationship between form and force closure provided by the bony stability of the pelvis and the musculature contracting across the joint provides stability and allows for force transfer. During pregnancy, increased laxity of the pelvis influences the ability of the musculature to activate appropriately, and for some, this can lead to poor adaptation and symptoms of PRPGP. This study examines the effect of targeted trunk-specific exercises as well as biomechanical and positioning education for the management of PRPGP.
