Clarifying Our Role: Academy Statement on ABPTS Women's Health Board Certification Name Change Proposal

The Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy appreciates the thoughtful efforts of the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) in proposing a name change for the board certification from "Women's Health" to "Pelvic and Women's Health". We recognize that this proposed change reflects an effort to honor both the longstanding commitment to advancing women’s health and the growing emphasis on inclusive, pelvic health-focused care.

The Board Certification in Women's Health is developed, managed, and governed by ABPTS. The Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy does not oversee, manage, or make decisions regarding board certification processes, requirements, or titles.

While the Academy was not involved in the development of this motion, we understand the intent to align the certification title with the evolving scope of clinical practice and with terminology used in related areas of the profession, such as our journal, the Journal of Women’s and Pelvic Health Physical Therapy. The ABPTS has reached out to the Academy for initial input and we are supportive of the direction of the proposal.

We recognize that our members and stakeholders may hold a range of perspectives on this topic. We believe the proposed name change offers a thoughtful path forward—supporting inclusive care for people of all genders while continuing to champion the advancement of women’s health in clinical practice, education, and research.
