Expanding Access to Postpartum Pelvic Health Physical Therapy Through Telehealth

Telehealth is transforming the way pelvic health physical therapists deliver postpartum care, creating new opportunities to improve access, continuity of care, and early intervention for new parents.
In this webinar, Dr. Jennifer Kinder, one of the authors of a pilot randomized controlled trial demonstrating that protocol-based telehealth pelvic health physical therapy is both feasible and acceptable, will discuss the current evidence supporting postpartum telehealth. She will be joined by Dr. Talya Krumholz, who will share George Washington University Hospital's innovative multidisciplinary protocol that begins with physical therapy during the acute care postpartum hospitalization and continues with a standardized 2-week outpatient telehealth evaluation for patients following cesarean birth and obstetric anal sphincter injuries. Together, the presenters will discuss the evidence, implementation strategies, clinical workflows, and practical considerations for integrating telehealth into postpartum rehabilitation to improve access and patient outcomes.
Attendees will leave with strategies they can adapt to expand access to timely, evidence-based postpartum pelvic health services in their own practice settings.
Webinar Objectives
- Describe the current evidence supporting telehealth for postpartum pelvic health physical therapy.
- Discuss the benefits and limitations of telehealth for improving access, continuity of care, and patient outcomes in the postpartum population.
- Identify key components of a structured postpartum telehealth program, including patient selection, clinical workflows, and outcome measures.
- Explain how telehealth can be integrated across the continuum of postpartum care, from acute care hospitalization through outpatient rehabilitation.
- Apply practical strategies for implementing or expanding postpartum telehealth services within their own clinical practice or health system.

Beth Northrup is a board-certified women’s health clinical specialist with expertise in obstetric physical therapy and advancing evidence-based care for birthing individuals. She practices in acute care at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital, one of the nation’s largest perinatal centers, where she has expanded physical therapy services for pregnant and postpartum patients and strengthened continuity of care across settings. Beth also serves as Program Coordinator for the University of Central Florida/Orlando Health Women’s Health Physical Therapy Residency, designing innovative training across both acute and outpatient environments. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Healthcare Administration to further improve access to comprehensive maternal care.
