Professional Bio

Dr. Stephenson is a physical therapist and medical writer, currently board certified clinical specialist in women’s health physical therapy at Newton-Wellesley Ambulatory Care Center in Newton, Massachusetts. She is the past President of the International Organization of Physical Therapists in Women’s Health, (IOPTWH) a sub-group of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT). She has additionally served on many national boards: for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists and the Section on Women’s Health of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Dr. Stephenson graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy and a Master’s and Doctorate from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. She is also a Certified childbirth educator and certified lymphadema therapist.

Rebecca has received many awards- World Confederation for Physical Therapy for service in May 2015, Section on Women’s Health APTA, Lucy Blair from the APTA in June 2013, Barbara Adams Fellow in the IHP post-Professional Physical Therapy and the Elizabeth Nobel Award from the Section on Women’s Health.

Dr. Stephenson specializes in obstetrics pre and post partum, pelvic floor disorders and trauma, incontinence, lymphadema and orthopedic areas of practice. Her areas of research include high-risk pregnancy and treatment of the breast cancer patient. She is the primary author on Obstetrics and Gynecologic Care in Physical Therapy second edition and additionally has written many chapters, study modules and videos on issues related to women’s health and orthopedics. She is adjunct clinical assistant professor for the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions and lectures nationally and internationally. Dr. Stephenson serves on the rehabilitation advisory board of the World Wide Fistula Fund and along with Terry Benedict founded the Global Women’s Health Initiative.
