Electrical Stimulation for Pediatric Bowel & Bladder Health

Presented by Andrea Branas, PT, DPT, MSE

Session Description

Pelvic Health disorders in children and adolescents, including bowel, bladder dysfunction and pain can be challenging to address. Physical therapists are uniquely trained to utilize electrical stimulation as part of a complete plan of care to treat pelvic health issues. It is well-known that electrical stimulation can be used to support pelvic health through muscle strengthening, reduction of overactive bladder symptoms and for pain reduction in adults. Research shows that Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TENS) can also improve symptoms of non-neurogenic urinary and fecal incontinence, encopresis and constipation in children and adolescents. In addition, TENS can help to reduce abdominal pain and primary dysmenorrhea in these populations. In this educational presentation, we will review common objectives, uses, contraindications and precautions when utilizing electrical stimulation to support pelvic health. We will present parameters, protocols and equipment needed to address common pelvic health concerns in pediatric and adolescent clients using neuromodulation. Following this presentation, learners will have the knowledge and skills to apply electrical stimulation in support of the pelvic health of their pediatric and adolescent clients.

Toilet Training in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities

Presented by Carina Siracusa, PT, DPT, EdD, PWCS, OncCS

Session Description

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders often face unique challenges in toilet training due to sensory sensitivities, communication differences, and difficulty with routine transitions. This presentation aims to develop and evaluate tailored, evidence-based strategies to improve toileting independence. Interventions will combine structured routines, visual supports, individualized reinforcement, and caregiver coaching, with optional integration of assistive technologies like reminder apps and adaptive equipment. Success will be measured through toileting proficiency, reduction in accidents, and caregiver stress levels. By providing practical, individualized tools and training, this presentation seeks to enhance self-care skills, promote autonomy, and improve family quality of life. The diagnoses that will be highlighted will include spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and pediatric CVA. Alternative toileting strategies like bowel programs and catheterization will also be discussed.

Toilet Learning Through a Pelvic Health Lens: Readiness, Red Flags, and Real-World Coaching

Presented by Molly Self, PT, DPT, PCS, CAPP-Pelvic

Session Description

Toilet learning is a developmental milestone that directly affects self-esteem, participation, and family routines. This session equips pelvic health PTs with an evidence-informed, child-centered framework to (1) identify readiness in both child and caregiver, (2) recognize constipation/withholding and lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) “red flags,” and (3) implement practical coaching strategies that translate into clinic on Monday. Participants will apply an ICF-based approach to connect impairments (bowel/bladder habits, pelvic floor tension, breathing patterns) with activity/participation challenges (daycare toileting, sleep disruption, social avoidance). We’ll teach caregiver friendly scripts, optimal toileting posture, and diaphragm–pelvic floor coordination strategies to reduce straining and promote efficient elimination. Interactive components include rapid polls, “what would you do next?” clinical decision points, and a brief implementation toolkit (readiness checklist + troubleshooting algorithm).
