During this seminar, participants will be introduced to foundational concepts of universal trauma precautions and the use of motivational interviewing. We will focus on techniques that promote patient autonomy and reduce feelings of vulnerability that are common among people who have experienced trauma. The spirit of motivational interviewing consists of three key elements: (1) collaboration; (2) supporting self-direction and choice; and (3) evocation, the process of focusing on the patient’s values and innate tendency towards personal growth.

After participating in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the widespread impact of trauma on patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Recognize diverse signs and symptoms of trauma.
  • Apply universal trauma precautions to reduce the risk of re-traumatization.
  • Implement basic motivational interviewing techniques to improve interpersonal communication among people who may experience protective. responses due to trauma exposure.
