Bridging Research and Clinical Practice

Wonder what it’s like to be a clinical researcher? Laurel Proulx, PT, DPT, PhD (c), Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy is a pelvic floor/orthopedic clinician and researcher who will share information about her research and different opportunities for physical therapists within the field of research.

We will cover the following:

1. The paradigm in which we currently treat musculoskeletal impairments associated or thought to contribute to pelvic pain and the limitations of the current paradigm.
2. Exploring the possibilities of future research to objectively measure musculoskeletal impairments in chronic pelvic pain and how this could change accessibility for patients as well as efficiency of pelvic PT treatment.
3. Reviewing recent research findings analyzing the role of muscle "stiffness" and joint range of motion in guiding interventions for pelvic pain

About the Presenter

Laurel Proulx, PT, DPT, PhD, Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy  

Laurel is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and an Orthopedic Certified Specialist and certified in Applied Functional Science. She has advanced training and experience in Women’s Health and Pelvic Health Physical Therapy completing advanced post-professional education at Texas Woman’s University. Her professional experience has taken her from working with high-level athletes, helping moms get back to feeling like themselves, working as a research physical therapist within the department of defense. Her most recent research is aimed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic pain within the active-duty population. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Texas Woman’s University studying muscular impairments of chronic pelvic pain. Laurel also operates an online education, telehealth, and consultation platform FEM Physical Therapy. Laurel has a vested interest in improving overall awareness and health literacy of pelvic health issues for her patients, other physical therapists, and all health professionals.
