Description
This workshop provides a comprehensive overview of strategies for improving pelvic floor function and managing incontinence following a prostatectomy. With prostate cancer being a significant health issue for American men, particularly those over 65 and non-Hispanic Black men, understanding the impact of surgery on pelvic health is crucial. The session will focus on the role of pelvic diaphragm muscles in recovery, exploring evidence-based exercises and re-education techniques to enhance continence and reduce pelvic pain. Additionally, the workshop will address potential complications such as pudendal neuralgia, offering practical advice for minimizing discomfort and supporting overall well-being.
Learning Objectives
After completion of this seminar, participants will be able to do the following with confidence:
- Understand Pelvic Diaphragm Function: Learn about the anatomy and function of the pelvic diaphragm, including how its dysfunction post-prostatectomy can lead to incontinence and pelvic pain.
- Identify Types of Dysfunction: Differentiate between pelvic diaphragm underactivity, overactivity, and dyssynergia to tailor recovery strategies effectively.
- Implement Effective Exercises: Explore and practice specific pelvic floor muscle training and re-education techniques, including Pilates-based approaches, to improve continence and reduce pain.
- Recognize Movement Contraindications: Understand and apply safety guidelines to avoid activities that may exacerbate symptoms or hinder recovery, such as lifting, running, or sexual activity.
- Manage Pudendal Neuralgia: Identify symptoms and causes of pudendal neuralgia, and learn strategies to alleviate nerve compression and discomfort.
This workshop aims to empower healthcare providers and individuals recovering from prostatectomy with practical tools and knowledge to support optimal pelvic health and improve quality of life.
